FAQ - Who’s really got the time to do this?
Who’s really got the time to do this?
Certainly this is a challenge for companies both big and small. The fact is that product environmental responsibility is a competency that—although in the very near term may be optional—in the medium to long term it is becoming clear is will become a necessary aspect of conducting business. Whether to manage resources effectively, meet government regulations, or manage consumer expectations adequately. In a small company there may be a single individual who takes on these tasks. The advantage in such a scenario is that there is a single focus for entire supply chain. In large organizations, the roles may be more diffuse (as it applies to design, sourcing, packaging, transportation, etc.). This may seem like more resources, but it really isn’t as coordination then becomes the issue. The challenge in all situations is to gain executive support, form a team (even if it is just one person), and get started. The good news is that through the work of the Eco Index effort, valuable tools are being created for you. It is not possible for any one organization—regardless of their size or competency—to tackle this challenge alone. Sustainability is a team sport.
