Instructions & Guidance

Sustainability, whatever the term may mean to you, is a vast, complex and constantly evolving subject. The flip side of the comprehensiveness of the Eco Index is that it contains an enormous amount of information, which can make using it – or even knowing where to begin - a daunting proposition.

We invite you to spend time looking through the wealth of resources available on this Beta Phase 1 Eco Index website. When you’re ready to dive in, the structure of the Eco Index offers several different levels of engagement throughout the life cycle stages: from qualitative “best practice” recommendations (guidelines), to a scoring system based on achievement of specific footprinting elements (indicators), to measurement of the actual quantities involved in the product’s footprint (metrics). Alternatively, you can choose to start with a single life cycle stage, such as packaging. While the goal is ultimately to take products through all levels of assessment within all life cycle stages, we encourage you to start engaging wherever you can within the Eco Index framework.
