Founded in 1989, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is the premier trade association for companies in the active outdoor recreation business. OIA provides trade services for over 4000 manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, sales representatives and retailers in the outdoor industry.

In 2007, OIA put its vision into practice by setting out to develop the industry’s first environmental assessment index for apparel, footwear and gear. Today, the effort is led by the OIA Eco Working Group, consisting of representatives from more than 100 outdoor companies who have contributed hours of effort and years of knowledge.

To date, the Eco Index initiative has been entirely funded by OIA and its member companies.
